¹⁴ In Śrīdhara’s works occur the earliest instances of the technical term pāṭī for arithmetic. Various authors have claimed that it refers to the calculating board (see, e.g., B. DATTA, "The Science of Calculation by the Board," AMM 35 (1928), 520—529), though others, with good reason, have questioned this meaning (e.g., R. VENKATACHALAM IYER, "Pāṭīgaṇita and the Hindu Abacus," MS 18 (1950), 79—82).
