Peasant Economy
v2.c60.s6.1
Of the produce of land, a large share went to the State in the form of the land-tax and various perquisites. Of the remainder, a customary share was fixed for various classes of domestic and other labourers. The peasant and his family kept the rest for their own use.⁴ A certain proportion went to the share of the priest and the temple. The carpenters, the smiths, the potters, the washermen, the scavengers, etc., were better off as they had to incur no expenditure, e.g. on feeding of livestock, and payment in cash and kind to agricultural labourers.
