v2.c72.s1.1
Affonso Henriques set up Portugal as a separate kingdom in A.D. 1140, and thereafter it was free of Spanish control. Its capital is Lisbon, a seaport situated on the right bank of the Tagus. Lisbon succeeded Coimbra as the capital of Portugal in A.D. 1260. Rising in white tiers on an amphitheatre of green hills, Lisbon has great scenic beauty.
