We said on p. 177 that Tāntrism encouraged the development of provincial vernaculars. Now Mahāpandita Rahula Sānkrityāyana has recovered personal biographies of Siddhas who flourished in Magadha, and from a study of their lives he has shown that many of the vernacular works were written at Nālandā. His article on these Siddhas is being published in the *Journal Asiatique*.¹
