Among later scholars who continued the tradition of Jyotiṣa and who, by their expositions and interpretations, helped to sustain and promote astronomical and astrological studies in the land, a mention might be made of four important names: (1) Rāma Vāriyar of Kaikkulaṅgara (1833-97), author of \*Samudrikaśastra\* and \*Gauliśastra\* and commentator of \*Hora\* and \*Praśnamārga\*;⁴ (2) A. R. Rajaraja Varma Koyittampurān (1853-1918) who wrote two studies entitled, respectively, \*Karaṇa-pariṣkaraṇa\* and \*Pañcāṅgaśuddhipaddhati\*⁵ and \*Jyotiṣaprakāśana\*,⁶ being an exposition of the \*Golādhyāya\* of Bhāskara II;¹ (3) Vāsuṇṇi Mūssatu of Veḷḷanaśśeri (1855-1914), author of an erudite commentary in Malayalam on \*Pañcabodha\*;² and (4) Puṇṇaśśeri Nampi Nīlakaṇṭha Śarmā (1858-1935) who compiled a very instructive manual on astronomy under the title \*Jyotiśśāstrasubodhinī\* with an extensive elucidation³ and wrote a \*Pañcabodhakriyā-Bhāṣā\*, besides commenting, elaborately, on the \*Camatkāracintāmaṇi\* and the \*Praśnamārga\*, both published through the Bharata Vilasam Press, Trichur.⁴
