The oviparous animals are divided by Suśruta into birds, snakes, \*Sarîsripas\*, etc. Dalvana notes that the \*Sarîsripas\* include fishes and \*Makaras\* (sea-fish with fierce teeth, हिंस्रदंष्ट्राः), and the "et cetera" comprehends tortoises and crocodiles (सरीसृपाः शीघ्रगामिनः कृष्णसर्पादयो मीनमकरादयो वा प्रभृतिग्रहणेन कूर्म्मनक्रादीनां ग्रहणम्)! The "moisture-born" are due to the moisture and heat either of the earth or of organisms (संस्वेदजाः भुवः शरीरस्य च संस्वेदात् उष्मणः जाताः). Of these, the \*Krimis\* (worms) arise from the moisture of the fæces in the bowels (कृमयः कोष्ठपुरीषादिवाष्पसम्भवाः—Dalvana); from putrefying dead bodies (शव—Suśruta; \*cf.\* शरीरे कियद् वेलानन्तरं समुत्पन्नानां कृम्यादीनां कथं चैतन्यम्—Guṇaratna, \*Tarka-rahasya-dîpikâ\* (\*Jainamatam\*); from decomposing curd or milk (\*e.g.\* वर्षासु च स्वेदादिना अनतिदवीयसैव कालेन दध्याद्यवयवा एव चलन्तः पूतनादिकृमिरूपा उपलभ्यन्ते—Jayanta, \*Nyâya-Manjarî\*, Âhnika 7, भूतचैतन्यपक्ष).
