### Foreword

### [c4.1](https://indike.org/pramana/ins.science.sen-1966.c4.1)

The genesis of this Bibliography and the plan followed in compiling it have been clearly explained in the author's Introduction. Of the two Units established by the National Institute of Sciences of India for preparing lists of source materials for the compilation of the history of various branches of sciences studied in Ancient India, the Unit I has already published a Scientific Synopsis of \*Caraka Saṃhitā\*, which has received high approbation of the learned public. This, the second publication prepared by Unit II, is a much bigger undertaking and has been done with great care and assiduity. I have no doubt that it will prove to be of great help in compiling the history of astronomy and mathematics in Ancient India.

### [c4.2](https://indike.org/pramana/ins.science.sen-1966.c4.2)

To prepare a bibliography of ancient Sanskrit manuscripts dealing with astronomy and mathematics with all necessary details such as have been attempted in this work, is really a very difficult undertaking, as it requires a knowledge of Sanskrit as well as mathematics and astronomy. Sri S. N. Sen and his two research assistants deserve our thanks for the able manner in which they have accomplished their task. As Chairman of the Advisory Committee, Ancient Period, of the National Commission for the Compilation of History of Sciences in India, I convey its thanks to them.
