It was written on birch-bark. A considerable portion of the manuscript had been destroyed and only some 70 leaves of birch-bark, of which a few again were mere scraps, survived at the time of its discovery. It is now in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. R. Hoernlé published two accounts of it,—a short one in 1883 and a fuller one in 1886. The last description was republished with some additions in 1888. The work was edited by G. R. Kaye, with a comprehensive introduction and published by the Government of India with photographic facsimiles and transliteration of the text. Hoernlé, Datta and others believed the date of the Ms. to be between the 3rd. and the 4th. century A.D., whereas Kaye expressed the view that the Ms. could not belong to a date earlier than the twelfth century A.D. It is a mathematical work containing rules, with illustrative examples and their solutions, for arithmetical, algebraic and geometrical (including mensuration) operations.
