THE profundity of the debates in the areas of philosophy, \*dharma\* (ethics and law) and Āyurveda, etc. led to the theoretical discussion on \*vāda\*, and a conceptual universe of Vādaśāstra was thus created. A theoretical framework on the art of debates had been evolved in the Vedic period. Besides documenting some of the most profound debates in their times, the Vedic texts also present a few technical terms and key concepts related to this discipline. The terms like \*yukti\*, \*tarka\*, \*smṛti\*, \*pratyakṣa\*, and \*aitihya\* are used in the Brāhmaṇas, Āraṇyakas and Upaniṣads.¹
