Regarding the aggregates (\*skandhas\*), bases (\*āyatanas\*) and elements, the Vaibhāṣikas believe that the word \*skandha\* means \*rāśi\*. It is an aggregate of the following:
• Past, present and future,
• the external and the internal,
• the gross or the subtle depending upon its status as resistant (\*sapragraha\*) or non-resistant (\*apratigraha\*),
• the inferior or the superior, and also depending upon whether it is sullied (\*kliṣṭa\*) or unsullied (\*akliṣṭa\*) with vices (\*kleśas\*), and
• the far or the near — depending upon whether it is past, present or future.
