Speaker's intention, when inferred by the wise in everyday convention and in poetic convention, is explained as threefold: suggested by intonation and the like, suggested by context and the like, and suggested by histrionic representation and the like. Among these, "intonation and the like" refers to intonation, tone, and caesura. Regarding these: / "A variation of vocal sound is designated as intonation by the steadfast." / That is threefold: with fixed restriction, with unfixed restriction, and without restriction. Among these, that with fixed restriction is twofold: with syntactic expectancy and without syntactic expectancy. Between the two, that which expects another sentence is with syntactic expectancy. That is threefold: containing objection, containing inquiry, and containing supposition. That which follows another sentence is without syntactic expectancy. That too is threefold: having the form of an injunction, having the form of an answer, and having the form of a determination. The very same sentence, by a particular intonation, is with syntactic expectancy; the very same [sentence], through another intonation, is without syntactic expectancy. Among these, one containing objection is as in: / "If the messenger-woman is dear to me, then I too am dear; / if her words are pleasing, then mine too are pleasing to the beloved." / This very one is, for the one pointing it out, of the form of an injunction. One containing inquiry is as in: / "Gone is that time when there was birth of pearls in creepers; / at present, the causes for those are pearl-oyster shells." / This very one is, for the one instructing, of the form of an answer. [One containing supposition]: / "This is a newly arisen cloud ready to rain, not an insolent night-wanderer; / this is a drawn rainbow, not his bow; / this too is a sharp downpour of rain, not a stream of arrows; / the lightning, bright as a gold touchstone, is not my beloved Urvaśī." / This very one is, for the one instructing, of the form of a determination. In this manner others also: / "O lord of all earth-supporting mountains, was that woman beautiful in all limbs, / charming in this lovely woodland edge, seen by you when separated from me?" / and so forth, are to be observed. All these three are with fixed restriction. Those with unfixed restriction, on the other hand, are endless. Among these, an intonation of concession and conciliation is as in: / "Indeed, having plunged into the sin of transgressing your command, I remained standing, / even among the younger brothers of upright conduct who met with reproof..."
