That is to say, dream. Its consequent is talking in sleep and so forth. Closing of the eyes and the like, however, are consequents of sleep alone and not of this, because they are not produced by this. As for what was said by the ancients, namely, "its consequents are stillness of the limbs, closing of the eyes," and so forth, it is to be understood that those, though otherwise accounted for, pervade this emotional state as well.
An example:
"'Cruel one! Ocean of false speech! Release the hem of my garment!
Your affection has been fully understood by me'—speaking thus,
with uninterrupted falling tears, slender, stripped of ornaments:
who here, O auspicious Sleep, could reveal her to me without you?"
This is an utterance addressed to Sleep by someone abroad who saw his beloved speaking thus even in a dream. Although the factual matter—"by revealing the condition of my beloved who had become such, O Sleep, a great disservice has been done by you"—and the erotic sentiment in separation enter the range of apprehension here, nevertheless, dreaming is cited as the suggestion here because it flashes forth first; it cannot prevent the suggestion of those two in the end.
