The operation (vṛtti), that is, the function, of the expressive (vācaka) word, which is the denoter, is the conveying of the expressed meaning.
The function of the expressed (vācya) meaning, which is the denoted sense, is entering into connection with another expressed meaning by virtue of expectancy (ākāṅkṣā), proximity (saṃnidhi), and compatibility (yogyatā).
