vastu netā rasasteṣāṃ bhedako vastu ca dvidhā /
tatrādhikārikaṃ mukhyamaṅgaṃ prāsaṅgikaṃ viduḥ //
‘Dramas are classified according to Subject-matter, Hero, and Sentiment.’
‘The Subject-matter (vastu) is twofold.’
‘The main [theme] is known as the Principal Subject (ādhikārika), the subordinate as the Incidental Subject (prāsaṅgika).’
