Rasarnavasudhakara 2.16

viṣādaḥ sa tridhā jyeṣṭha-madhyamādhama-saṃśrayāt |
sahāyānveṣaṇopāya-cintādyā uttame matāḥ ||

or from the realization of an offense, is despair (10).
It is threefold, depending on whether it resides in superior, middling, or inferior characters.
Searching for an ally, reflecting on expedients, and the like are considered [its consequents] in a superior [character] (11).
