atha (23) matiḥ-
nānā-śāstrāratha-mathanād artha-nirdhāraṇaṃ matiḥ |
tatra ceṣṭās tu kartavya-karaṇaṃ saṃśaya-chidā | 75
śiṣyopadeśa-bhrū-kṣepāv ūhāpohādayo' pi ca ||

Now (23) resolve (mati):
Mati is the ascertainment of meaning through churning the sense of various treatises. / Its actions, however, are the performance of duty, the cutting of doubt, // instruction of pupils, knitting of brows, as well as reasoning and refutation, and so on.
