atha bhayam-
bhayaṃ tu mantunā ghora-darśana-śravaṇādibhiḥ |
cittasyātīva cāñcalyaṃ tat prāyo nīca-madhyayoḥ ||
Now, fear:
Fear is an extreme agitation of the mind caused by an offense, by seeing or hearing terrifying things, and so on;
that [fear] occurs mostly in low and middling characters.
