sandhyayā praṇamito' smi nānyathā |
kiṃ na vetsi sahadharma-cāriṇaṃ
cakravāka-sama-vṛttim ātmanaḥ ||

[Causeless pique] of the woman is as [in]:
"Relinquish your anger, O woman of innocent eyes!
I bowed to the twilight goddess, not to any other woman.
Do you not know that your lifelong partner
has conduct like that of the cakravāka?"

atra pārvatī-māna-kāraṇasya parameśvara-kṛta-sandhyā-praṇāmasyābhāsatvam |

Here, the cause of Pārvatī's pique—the Supreme Lord's salutation to twilight—is a semblance [of a cause].

2.420.p3

nanu aliapasuttety atra gaṇḍa-paricumbanasya niṣedho nāsti | evaṃ muñca kopam ity atra ca niṣedho na śrūyate | tat katham asya nirhetukasya (meti vā neti vā niṣedhābhāve' pi) mānatvam iti cet | meti neti vācika-niṣedhasya upalaksaṇatvāt (aliapasutteti) pūrvasminn udāharaṇe apratikriyayā cumbanānaṅgīkāra-lakṣaṇo niṣedho vidyata eva | aparatra (muñca kopam ity atra) punar anuttara-dānādinā anaṅgīkāra-lakṣaṇo niṣedho vaktavya eva |

Now, it might be objected: in the verse beginning 'aliapasutta', there is no prohibition against kissing the cheek. Likewise, in the verse beginning 'muñca kopam', no prohibition is heard. So how can this causeless state be pique, even in the absence of a prohibition such as 'don't' or 'no'? If this is asked, [the answer is:] because a verbal prohibition such as 'don't' or 'no' is an indirect indication; in the previous example beginning 'aliapasutta', a prohibition characterized by the non-acceptance of a kiss is indeed present through lack of reciprocation. In the other [example] beginning 'muñca kopam', on the other hand, a prohibition characterized by refusal is indeed to be stated through not giving a reply and the like.

2.420.p4

nanu nirhetukasya mānasya bhāva-kauṭilya-rūpa-mānasya ca ko bheda iti ced ucyate | nirhetuka-māne tu kopa-vyājena cumbanādi-vilambanāt prema-parīkṣaṇaṃ phalam | bhāva-kauṭilya-māne tu cumbanādy-avilambaḥ phalam iti spaṣṭa eva tayor bhedaḥ |

Now, if it is asked: what is the difference between causeless pique and pique in the form of crookedness of emotional disposition? It is answered: in causeless pique, however, the result is the testing of love by delaying kissing and the like under the pretext of anger. In pique that is crookedness of emotional disposition, on the other hand, the result is the absence of delay in kissing and the like. Thus the distinction between the two is quite clear.
