yathā ratnāvalyāṃ, rājā (upasṛtya udbandhanam apanīya)-devi ! kim idaṃ akāryaṃ kriyate ?
mama kaṇṭha-gatāḥ prāṇāḥ pāśe kaṇṭha-gate tava |
anarthārtha-prayatno' yaṃ tyajyatāṃ sāhasaṃ priye ||
As in the Ratnāvalī, the King (approaching and removing the noose): “Queen! Why is this improper deed being done?”
“My life-breaths have reached my throat, as the noose has reached your throat.
This effort aims only at misfortune; abandon this rashness, my beloved!”

atra pāśe vāsavadattā-kaṇṭha-gate tat-kārya-bhūtasya prāṇānāṃ kaṇṭha-gatatvasya vatsa-rājena svasmin kalpanāt kṣobhaḥ |
Here, because the King of Vatsa imagines in himself the condition of life-breaths reaching the throat—which is the effect of the noose reaching the throat—when the noose has reached Vāsavadattā's throat, this is perturbation.
