2.352

"Because of her common [unmarried] status, even another man asks for the maiden without hesitation;
how much more the conqueror of the worlds, the great-grandson of Brahmā?"

2.352.p1

[Mahāvīracarita 1.31]

2.352.p2

And he commented: "The intellect of Rāma, who is noble by nature, adheres by its very disposition to truth and does not turn toward any other object; nor, once set in motion, does it cease. Directed thus in the form of 'This Sītā is worthy of my acceptance,' stimulated by Rāvaṇa's suit and Lakṣmaṇa's encouragement, and united with emerging [states] such as anxious reflection, deliberative doubt, bashfulness, dissimulation, and recollection, and with discrimination, dexterity, courage, magnanimity, and the like inferred from timely replies, it matures in the form of the exalted aesthetic sentiment."

2.352.p3

Now, in this matter, Rāma's judgment concerning Sītā—taking the form of a conviction of her suitability to be taken [in marriage] by himself—is merely the cause of the arising of erotic love; for without that conviction, erotic love would be improper. Here, the judgment that the maiden is suitable for marriage is [the transitory state of] judgment. If it be claimed: “We accept its durability [as a sthāyibhāva],” no, that is not so. For, by eliminating the fault of shame and resentment concerning Rāvaṇa, taking the form of an extraordinary resolve to attain her characterized by not turning away from the performance of duty, it stimulates Rāma's heroic energy so as to be fit for the relish of appreciators.
