Summary
28.1
rāśi prabhedo graha yoni bhedo viyoni janma atha niṣeka kālaḥ/
janma atha sadyo maraṇaṃ tathā āyur daśā vipāko aṣṭaka varga saṃjñaḥ//(upajātikā)
The divisions of the zodiacal signs, the distinct natures of the planets, non-human births, then the time of conception, / birth, then immediate death, likewise longevity, the ripening of planetary periods, and that known as aṣṭakavarga;
28.2
karma ājīvo rāja yogāḥ kha yogāś cāndrā yogād vigraha ādyāś ca yogāḥ/
pravraja atho rāśi śīlāni dṛṣṭir bhāvas tasmād āśrayo atha prakīrṇaḥ//(śālinī)
Means of livelihood through work, royal combinations, celestial combinations, lunar combinations, and combinations beginning with the planets; / then renunciation, the temperaments of the zodiacal signs, planetary aspects, the houses, thereafter the dependency of houses, and miscellaneous matters;
28.3
na iṣṭā yogā jātakaṃ kāminīnāṃ niryāṇaṃ syān na iṣṭa janma dṛkāṇaḥ/
adhyāyānāṃ viṃśatiḥ pañca yuktā janmany etad yātrikaṃ ca abhidhāsye//(śālinī)
Unfavorable combinations, the nativities of women, death, lost horoscopy, and the decans: / this constitutes twenty-five chapters on nativities; and I shall now expound upon military expeditions:
28.4
praśnās tithir bhaṃ divasaḥ kṣaṇaś ca candro vilagnaṃ tv atha lagna bhedaḥ/
śuddhir grahāṇām atha cāpa vādo vimiśraka ākhyaṃ tanu vepanaṃ ca//(upajātikā)
Queries, the lunar day, the lunar mansion, the weekday, the moment, the Moon, the rising ascendant, and the divisions of the ascendant; / the purification of planets, then the bow-shaped appearance, that called the mixed, and the quivering of the body.
28.5
ataḥ paraṃ guhyaka pūjanaṃ syāt svapnaṃ tataḥ snāna vidhiḥ pradiṣṭaḥ/
yajño grahāṇām atha nirgamaś ca kramāc ca diṣṭaḥ śakuna upadeśaḥ//(upajātikā)
Beyond this, there is the worship of the Guhyakas, then dreams, the rule for bathing is taught,
the sacrifice to the planets, and then setting out, and in due order the teaching on omens is declared.
28.6
vivāha kālaḥ karaṇaṃ grahāṇāṃ proktaṃ pṛthak tad vipulā atha śākhā/
skandhais tribhir jyotiṣa saṃgraho ayaṃ mayā kṛto daiva vidāṃ hitāya//(upajātikā)
The time of marriage, and the computation of the planets, are declared separately; then there is that extensive branch.
In three branches this compendium of astronomy has been made by me for the benefit of astrologers.
28.7
pṛthu viracitam anyaiḥ śāstram etat samastaṃ tad anu laghu mayā idaṃ tat pradeśa artham eva/
kṛtam iha hi samarthaṃ dhī viṣāṇāmatve mama yadi ha yad uktaṃ saj janaiḥ kṣamyatāṃ tat//(mālinī)
This entire science was composed extensively by others; thereafter, this concise [work] was made by me merely for [reaching] its regions.
Indeed, it is capable here [of instructing]; if anything has been stated here through the dullness of my intellect, may good people forgive that.
28.8
granthasya yā pracarato asya vināśam eti kekhvyāt bahu śrita mukha adhigama krameṇa/
yad vā mayā kukṛtam alpam iha ākṛtaṃ vā kāryaṃ tad atra viduṣā parihṛtya rāgam//(va ti)
Whatever [portion] of this work being circulated is lost from being transcribed, or through the succession of oral transmission from many scholars,
or whatever has been poorly done by me here, or omitted, let the wise person emend that without bias.
28.9
āditya dāsa tanayas tad avāpta bodhaḥ kāpitthake savitṛ labdha vara prasādaḥ/
āvantiko muni matāny avalokya samyag ghorāṃ varāhamihiro rucirāṃ cakāra.(va ti)
The son of Ādityadāsa, having acquired knowledge from him, who obtained the grace of boons from the Sun at Kāpitthaka,
Varāhamihira of Avantī, having thoroughly examined the opinions of the sages, composed this splendid horā.
28.10
dina kara muni guru caraṇa praṇipāta kṛta prasāda matinā idam/
śāstram upasaṃgṛhītaṃ namo astu pūrva pranetṛbhyaḥ//(āryā)E28
By one whose mind received grace through prostrating at the feet of the Sun, the sages, and his teacher, this
science has been compiled; homage be to the ancient authors!
