Royal Combinations

11.1

The Yavanas say: by malefics in their own exaltations, a king of cruel intellect is born;
but according to the view of Jīvaśarman, a ruler of the earth does not arise through malefics.

11.2

When Mars, Saturn, the Sun, and Jupiter—either all [four] or three of them—are in their own exaltations, sixteen kings are declared, [each] in one ascendant;
and likewise, when two or one are situated [in exaltation], with the Moon in her own domicile, in any one ascendant, there are sixteen rulers of the earth.

11.3

When the ascendant or the Moon is in a vargottama,
aspected by four or more planets excluding the Moon, twenty-two kings are recorded.

11.4

When Saturn is in Aquarius, the Sun in Aries, the Moon in Taurus, these being in the ascendant, with Gemini containing Mercury, Jupiter, and Mars in Scorpio, rulers of men arise.
When Saturn and the Moon are in exaltation in the ascendant, the Sun and Mercury in the sixth sign, with the domiciles of Libra, Aries, and the Moon [occupied] by Venus, Mars, and Jupiter respectively, two rulers of men arise.

11.5

When Mars is exalted, the Sun and the Moon are in Sagittarius, and Saturn is in the ascendant, [he is] a ruler of the earth; and another ruler of the earth [arises] when Mars is in the ascendant with the Moon;
when Saturn with the Moon is in the seventh house, Jupiter is in Sagittarius, and the Sun, exalted, has attained the ascendant, [he is] a ruler of the earth.

11.6

When Taurus with the Moon is in the ascendant, and the Sun, Jupiter, and Saturn are in the fourth, seventh, and tenth houses, he becomes by rule a lord of men.
When Saturn is in the ascendant in Capricorn, and the Moon and the others are in the third, sixth, ninth, and twelfth houses, a celebrated ruler of men possessing vast virtues and fame arises.

11.7

When Jupiter with the Moon is in Sagittarius, Mars in Capricorn, and Venus and Mercury in their own exaltations in the ascendant, here [are two] kings.
When Mars and Saturn are in the fifth, Jupiter, the Moon, and Venus are in the fourth, and Mercury is in the ascendant in Virgo, another virtuous king is indeed born.

11.8

When Pisces with the Moon is in the ascendant, and Saturn, Mars, and the Sun are situated in Aquarius, Capricorn, and Leo, whoever is born truly rules the earth.
When Mars is in Aries in the ascendant, and Jupiter is in the sign of the Moon, or Jupiter is in the ascendant, another virtuous ruler of the earth [arises].

11.9

With Cancer as the ascendant and Jupiter situated in it, while the Moon, Venus, and Mercury have attained the eleventh,
and the Sun is in Aries: know that one born [thus] is an endowed-with-valour lord of the earth.

11.10

When Saturn is in the ascendant in Capricorn, Aries, Cancer, and Leo are occupied by their lords,
and Mercury and Venus are in Gemini and Libra, then [he is] a ruler of the earth of vast renown.

11.11

When Mercury is in his own exaltation in the ascendant, Venus occupies the midheaven,
the Moon with Jupiter is in the seventh, and Saturn and Mars are in the fifth, [the native is] a king.

11.12

Even men born in base families partake of kingship—how much more those sprung from royal lineages!—through the declared royal combinations.
Those sprung from a royal lineage become sovereigns through those to be declared [hereafter]; among them, one not a king's son becomes equal to a king.

11.13

Born of a royal dynasty, they become lords of men by three or more planets in exaltation, own sign, or trine, possessing strength;
those born of other lineages [become kings] by five or more; by fewer, they are endowed with wealth, but not rulers of the earth.

11.14

When the Sun is in the first degree of Aries, the Moon in the ascendant in Aries, Mars in his own exaltation, Saturn in Aquarius,
and Jupiter has reached Sagittarius, know the son of a king to be a lord of the earth.

11.15

When Venus is in its own sign in the fourth house, the Moon has reached the house of fortune,
and the remaining [planets] occupy the third, the ascendant, and the eleventh house, the native becomes lord of the earth.

11.16

When Mercury, endowed with strength, is in the ascendant, and a benefic, rich in strength, is in a benefic [sign],
while the remaining [planets] are in the ninth, second, and upacaya houses, a king's son, righteous in soul, becomes lord of the earth.

11.17

When Taurus rises and the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, and the others are in the ascendant, the second, the sixth, and the eleventh houses, a king is born;
when Jupiter is in the fourth, the Moon and the Sun are in the tenth, and Taurus rises with the other [planets] in the eleventh house, a king is born.

11.18

When the Moon, Saturn, and Jupiter are in the tenth, eleventh, and ascendant, Mercury and Mars in the second, and Venus and the Sun in the fourth, they produce a lord of men;
when Mars and Saturn, the Moon, Jupiter, Venus, the Sun, and Mercury are placed in the horā, the fourth, the seventh, the ninth, the tenth, and the eleventh houses, they produce a ruler of subjects.

11.19

The acquisition of royalty occurs in the period of maturation of the lord of the tenth or the ascendant, or of the strongest [planet];
in the period of one that has gone to an enemy’s or debilitation sign, a period of downfall is to be deduced.

11.20

When Jupiter, Venus, and Mercury are in the ascendant, Saturn in the seventh, and the lord of the day in the sky, one should know the birth of men of pleasure;
when the cardinal houses contain benefics endowed with strength and the malefics are in malefic [signs], one attains lordship over Śabaras and brigands, and possesses wealth.
