the epicycles stated by Bhāskara are different from the fast epicycles stated by Brahmagupta. The true-computation of the epicycles of Mars and Venus performed by Bhāskara is known from the verses stated by him. A great difference between the fast epicycles stated by the author (Vaṭeśvara) and the fast epicycles recited by Bhāskara and others is indeed visibly apparent. The author did not perform any correction or the like of the epicycles, as Bhāskara did for Mars and Venus. Why Bhāskara too performed the true-computation only for those two (Mars and Venus) and not for the others—no reason whatever is shown here for this. || 50
Now the measures of the fast epicycles of the planets beginning with Mars are stated:
Given measures: 233, 138, 65, 260, 32—these are respectively the degrees of the epicycles (named ten parts) of the planets beginning with Mars.
Rationale:
The sine of the maximum fast equation of the planets beginning with Mars is called the sine of the maximum fast equation. With the manda-corrected planet as center, the circle formed with the radius of the sine of the maximum fast equation is the circumference of the fast apsis circle. To know that, one first determines the sine of the maximum fast equation. When the distance-hypotenuse is computed by the methods for finding the distance-hypotenuse of these planets, when it is at its maximum, the planets are at the apogee position. Therefore, there the maximum apogee-hypotenuse = trijyā + sine of the maximum fast equation; and at the extreme minimum of the distance-hypotenuse, they are at the perigee position, so the maximum perigee-hypotenuse = trijyā - sine of the maximum fast equation. Maximum apogee-hypotenuse = trijyā + sine of the maximum fast equation; trijyā - maximum perigee-hypotenuse = sine of the maximum fast equation.
Knowing the sine of the maximum fast equation in this way, one forms the proportion: if in the radius of the trijyā one obtains 360 degrees, then what in the radius of the sine of the maximum fast equation? From this proportion comes the measure of the circumference of the fast apsis circle, which according to its sine of the maximum fast equation equals the above-stated value.
Considering that in the Sūryasiddhānta the sine of the maximum fast equation is also not always fixed, different degrees of the epicycles are recited according to the distinction between the ends of even and odd quadrants, as in:
"Beginning with Mars, at the end of an even [quadrant, they are]...; at the end of an odd [quadrant, they are] 232, 132, 72, 260, 40; these are stated in the fast computation." Thus.
Bhāskarācārya has recited the following fast epicycles through the following verses:
"Their fast [epicycles] are: the Kṛtas and the Jinas minus one-third, the teeth and the Moon, the Vasus and the flavors, the Vasus, the arrows, and the Dasras," etc.:
Mars' epicycle 243° 40', Mercury's fast epicycle 132°, Jupiter's fast epicycle 68°, Venus' fast apsis epicycle 258°, Saturn's fast epicycle 40°. Here too Saturn's fast epicycle stated by Bhāskara is different from that stated by Brahmagupta. Bhāskarācārya has performed the correction of the epicycles of Mars and Venus. The measures of the fast epicycles recited by Bhāskara and others are quite different from the measures of the fast epicycles recited by the author (Vaṭeśvara). Bhāskarācārya performed the correction of the epicycles only for Mars and Venus; he has not stated the reason for this. || 50
