"ūrdhva..." [The meaning is] clear. "nīcasthito..." [This is] easily understood. "śanyarka..." Here he states the division into malefic and benefic planets. In that regard, the waning state of the Moon is to be known from the eleventh tithi of the dark fortnight up to the end of the fifth [tithi] of the bright fortnight; the rest is easily understood. "yasminnṛkṣe..." In whichever asterism, [that is,] lunar mansion, a heavenly body, [that is,] a planet, is situated, from that [point], by virtue of the planet's gaze to be described ahead, there will be threefold piercing in the left, direct, and [right] directions. "bhuktaṃ bhogyam..." The lunar mansion that has been traversed, is being traversed, is to be traversed, or has been occupied and pierced by a malefic planet—this set of four must be avoided with great care in auspicious and inauspicious undertakings. "vakrage..." When the five [planets] beginning with Mars are retrograde, [that is,] moving retrogradely, the gaze is to the right; / when moving swiftly, in swift motion, there is a gaze to the left, [that is,] a gaze directed to the left side; in mean motion, in their normal motion, the gaze is to be known as central, [that is,] direct.
