'Furthermore, Vāsiṣṭha, after the rasapṛthivī had disappeared, pṛthivīparpaṭaka arose. In color it was like canaka; in taste it was like sugarcane, or else like honey, fragrant, sweet, and delicate, edible for humans. The sentient beings of that time then ate pṛthivīparpaṭaka, which nourished them for a long time. Those sentient beings who greedily ate much became thin and weak in bodily appearance, while those who ate little became plump and solid in bodily appearance. Then those who were plump and solid, seeing those who were thin and weak, did not know the cause and said: "You are thin and weak, but I am plump and solid." From this, they gave rise to thoughts of māna; because of this condition, the pṛthivīparpaṭaka disappeared. At that time, the sentient beings, having seen that the pṛthivīparpaṭaka had disappeared, all cried out, saying: "Alas, what misery! Alas, what misery! Why has this pṛthivīparpaṭaka now disappeared?"
