"What are the minor matters of deportment and moral conduct by which unlearned ordinary people simply praise [the Buddha] in accordance with reality based on what they see? They praise him, saying: 'The śramaṇa Gautama has abandoned killing, eliminated killing, laid aside swords and staves, possesses a sense of shame and conscience, and has compassion for all.' These are minor matters of deportment and moral conduct by which that unlearned ordinary person praises the Buddha. They also praise him: 'The śramaṇa Gautama has abandoned taking what is not given, eliminated taking what is not given, and has no mind for theft.' They also praise him: 'The śramaṇa Gautama has abandoned sexual desire, purely cultivates the holy life, single-mindedly guards the precepts, does not practice sexual misconduct, and his conduct is pure.' They also praise him: 'The śramaṇa Gautama has abandoned and eliminated false speech; his words are sincere, what he speaks is true, and he does not deceive the people of the world. The śramaṇa Gautama has abandoned and eliminated malicious speech: he does not use this person's words to disrupt that person, nor that person's words to disrupt this person; he can reconcile those in dispute, and for those already reconciled, he increases their joy; whatever he speaks does not deviate from harmony, is sincere and touches the heart, and his words are spoken in a timely manner. The śramaṇa Gautama has abandoned and eliminated harsh speech: if there are coarse words that harm others, or increase enmity and cultivate hatred, he does not utter any such coarse words at all; he constantly uses wholesome words that gladden people's hearts, words that are beloved and pleasing to the multitude, which one never tires of hearing—he speaks only such words. The śramaṇa Gautama has abandoned and eliminated frivolous speech, speaking only words that are timely, truthful, beneficial, according with the Dharma, according with the Vinaya, and curbing wrongdoing.'
