"Whereas other śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas, having eaten what is given in faith by others, further use devices to seek to act as messengers, delivering messages for kings, royal ministers, brāhmaṇas, or gṛhapatis, going from here to there and from there to here, taking this message to give to that one, and taking that message to give to this one, either doing so themselves or instructing others to do so, the śramaṇa Gautama has no such things. Whereas other śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas, having eaten what is given in faith by others, only practice the arts of battle and contention, or practice with knives, staves, bows, and arrows, or fight cocks, dogs, pigs, sheep, elephants, horses, cattle, camels, and various beasts, or pit men and women against one another, or produce various sounds—the sounds of blowing [horns], drumming, singing, and dancing—climbing poles and doing somersaults, practicing and indulging in all kinds of acrobatic spectacles, the śramaṇa Gautama has no such things. Whereas other śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas, having eaten what is given in faith by others, practice obstacle-creating arts and maintain their livelihood through wrong livelihood, reading the marks of men and women, whether auspicious or inauspicious, good or bad, as well as reading the marks of livestock, in order to seek material gain, the śramaṇa Gautama has no such things.
