"Whatever śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas there are who, concerning the future and future views, propound innumerable varieties according to their inclinations, they do not go beyond forty-four views. Only the Buddha can know the grounds of these views, which is likewise so. Whatever śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas there are who, concerning the past and past views or the future and future views, propound innumerable varieties according to their inclinations, they are all included within these sixty-two views; concerning the past and past views or the future and future views, they propound innumerable varieties according to their inclinations, not going beyond these sixty-two views. Only the Tathāgata knows the grounds of these views, which is likewise so. Whatever śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas there are who, concerning the past and past views, give rise to eternalist doctrines, saying: 'The self and the world are eternal'—those śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas generate knowledge regarding this based on other faith, other inclination, other tradition, other conditions, other reflection, other views, other meditation, or other forbearance; thus they generate knowledge, and because of their longing for manifestations, this is called grasping—and so on, down to nirvāṇa in the present life, it is likewise so. Whatever śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas there are who give rise to eternalist doctrines, saying: 'The world is eternal'—conditioned by feeling, they arouse craving and give rise to craving without being aware of it; tainted by craving and overcome by craving—and so on, down to nirvāṇa in the present life, it is likewise so. Whatever śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas there are who, concerning the past and past views, give rise to eternalist doctrines, saying: 'The world is eternal'—it is on the condition of contact; to establish a doctrine apart from the condition of contact is impossible—and so on, down to nirvāṇa in the present life, it is likewise so. Whatever śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas there are who, concerning the past and past views or the future and future views, make declarations according to their respective views, they are all included within the sixty-two views; making declarations according to their respective views, they are entirely enclosed within them, not going beyond them. Just as a skillful fisherman covers a small pond with a fine-meshed net, knowing that all the aquatic creatures in the pond will enter the net with no place to escape, not getting beyond it; so it is with these śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas: their various assertions regarding the past and past views or the future and future views are all included within the sixty-two views, not going beyond them.
