At that time, the Venerable Ānanda was sitting in a quiet chamber, quietly reflecting to himself: “How wonderful! How extraordinary! When the Tathāgata bestows prophecies upon people, it brings vast benefit. When the minister Gaggara died, the Tathāgata prophesied of him: ‘This person, having died, has severed the five lower fetters and attained extinction right there in heaven, not returning to this world.’ When the ministers—the second Kaliṅga, the third Vikaṭa, the fourth Gālīsu, the fifth Cāru, the sixth Bhayaru, the seventh Bhaddaru, the eighth Subhaddaru, the ninth Tariśanu, the tenth Sudariśanu, the eleventh Yaśas, and the twelfth Yaśottara—died, the Buddha also prophesied of them: ‘Having severed the five lower fetters, they have attained extinction right there in heaven, not returning to be born here.’ Furthermore, when another fifty persons died, the Buddha also prophesied of them: ‘Having severed the three fetters and attenuated lust, anger, and delusion, they have attained sakṛdāgāmin, and upon returning once to this world will put an end to suffering.’ Furthermore, when five hundred persons died, the Buddha also prophesied of them: ‘Having exhausted the three fetters, they have attained srotāpanna, will not fall into evil destinies, and after seven rebirths at most will certainly put an end to suffering.’ Wherever disciples of the Buddha died, the Buddha prophesied of all of them: ‘Such a one is reborn in such a place; such a one is reborn in such a place.’ The sixteen great nations—Aṅga, Magadha, Kāśi, Kosala, Vṛji, Malla, Ceti, Vatsa, Kuru, Pañcāla, Aśmaka, Avanti, Vatsa, Śūrasena, Gandhāra, and Kamboja—when persons in those sixteen great nations died, the Buddha prophesied of them all; yet when people of Magadha died, who were all of royal lineage and closely trusted by the king, the Buddha did not prophesy of them.”
