At that time, Kumāra-Kāśyapa was wandering through the country of Kosala together with five hundred bhikṣus, gradually arriving at the brāhmaṇa village of Setavyā. Kumāra-Kāśyapa then stayed in the Śiṃśapā Grove north of Setavyā village. At that time, there was a brāhmaṇa named Pāyāsi who resided in Setavyā village. This village was affluent and pleasant, with a large population and luxuriant trees. King Pasenadi had separately granted this village to the brāhmaṇa Pāyāsi as a brahmadeya gift. The brāhmaṇa Pāyāsi constantly harbored deviant views, proclaiming to people: 'There is no other world, nor is there rebirth, nor is there fruit or retribution of good and evil deeds.'
