“What are eight things that retreat? The eight kinds of indolence: What are the eight kinds of indolence? A monk soliciting alms doesn’t get alms. He then thinks, ‘Today, I went to town to solicit alms and didn’t get any. My body feels weak and incapable of sitting in meditation or walking back and forth. Now, I ought to lie down and rest.’ That indolent monk then lies down to rest, refusing to diligently attempt to attain what he has yet to attain, obtain what he has yet to obtain, and realize what he has yet to realize. This is the first indolence.
