"Just so, bhikṣus! What I have clearly declared to people from the Dharma that I directly realized upon attaining complete awakening is like the leaves in my hand. Why is that? Because that Dharma is beneficial to the meaning, beneficial to the Dharma, beneficial to the brahmacarya, leads to clarity, wisdom, complete awakening, and leads toward nirvāṇa. The true Dharma that I know for myself upon attaining complete awakening, but have not taught, is likewise like the leaves in the great forest. Why is that? Because that Dharma is not beneficial to the meaning, not beneficial to the Dharma, not beneficial to the brahmacarya, and does not lead to clarity, wisdom, complete awakening, or directly toward nirvāṇa. Therefore, bhikṣus, those who have not directly comprehended the four noble truths should diligently apply expedients, arouse supreme desire, and train in direct comprehension."
