146. “The eight great hells,” a reference to the eight hot hells, that is, the Reviving Hell (Sañjīva), the Black Thread Hell (Kālasūtra), the Crushing Hell (Saṃghāta), the Shrieking Hell (Raurava), the Screaming Hell (Mahāraurava), the Hot Hell (Tapana), the Hell of Extreme Heat (Pratāpana), and the Hell of Ceaseless Agony (Avīci).
