Just as by the falling of water drops / A large vessel is filled, / The steadfast one is filled with virtue / Accumulated bit by bit. / Those wishing to cross the oceanic flood, / Having built a causeway, abandon the foul marsh; / While people construct a raft, / Wise people cross over. / Having crossed over, the Buddha Bhagavān, / The brāhmaṇa, stands on dry ground; / The bhikṣus bathe therein, / And the śrāvakas build a raft. / Just as a great deep lake / Is utterly pure and free of turbidity, / So the wise, possessing clear faith, / Listen to the Dharma. / Since water is everywhere like this, / Who would search and wander? / What need is there of well water? / Cut craving at the root! / Dyers wash with water, / Fletcher straighten arrows with fire, / Carpenters plane wood; / The wise tame themselves. / Unattached like space, / Unshakeable like a doorframe, / Like a turbid lake, / The wise take no delight in saṃsāra. / The Chapter on Water, the seventeenth. // This world of Yama together with gods— / Who will conquer this earth? / Who is skilled in teaching well the four dharmas, / Desirable like flowers? / This world of Yama together with gods, / And this earth, the trainee [conquers]; / The one who is skilled in teaching well the four dharmas, / Desirable like flowers. / Because fear arises from the forest, / Cut down the forest, not the tree! / Cut down the forest and the underbrush, / And, O śramaṇa, cross beyond sorrow! / If the underbrush is not cut down, / Even the subtlest [desire] will sprout in men; / Like a calf desiring milk near its mother, / By that, one's mind is thoroughly bound. / Having cut away delight in the self, / Like an autumn lotus with the hand, / Cultivate the peaceful path / Unto the nirvāṇa spoken by the Jina. / Just as a lovely flower
