2.71

諸比丘白佛言：「五百梵志及長者等，本行何德，得道何速？」世尊告曰：「過去久遠時，世有佛，名曰迦葉，為諸弟子說法，當來五濁之時。時有梵志長者千人，同發是言：『令我遭見釋迦文佛。』爾時梵志者，今此等梵志是；爾時長者，今美音等是。從是因緣，見我便解。」

The bhikṣus said to the Buddha: "What virtues did the five hundred brahmacārins and the śreṣṭhin and the others practice in the past, that they attained the Way so swiftly?" The Bhagavat told them: "In the distant past, there was a Buddha in the world named Kāśyapa who was preaching the Dharma to his disciples regarding the future time of the five defilements. At that time, there were a thousand brahmacārins and śreṣṭhins who made this vow together: 'May we encounter and see Śākyamuni Buddha.' The brahmacārins of that time are these brahmacārins today; the śreṣṭhins of that time are Kalyāṇaghoṣa and the others today. Due to this cause and condition, as soon as they saw me, they were liberated."
