When the Buddha had spoken the verse, the minds of the five hundred brahmacārins opened to understanding of themselves. They immediately came forward, bowed to the Buddha with their bodies cast to the ground, clasped their hands, and addressed the Buddha, saying: "Stubborn, foolish, and inferior, we had not comprehended your sagely instruction. We only wish you will compassionately nurture us so that we may become śramaṇas." The Buddha immediately permitted and accepted them, and all became śramaṇas. Seeing the Buddha's transformations, the villagers, old and young, all rejoiced; they all attained the trace of the Way, and the place was called the Village of the Worthy, no longer bearing the name of the Butchers. When the Buddha finished his meal, he returned to the vihāra.
On hearing these words, the Brahmans were convinced of their folly, and became disciples. The butcher also and his associates were converted, and then the All-Wise returned to the Vihāra.
