Noriaki Hakamaya, in his detailed analysis of Bhavasaṅkrāntisūtra, theorizes that the prose section of the Bhavasaṅkrāntisūtra and its parallel in the Pitāputrasamāgamasūtra originated as an explanation on the topic of transmigration that later developed under the influence of the Prajñāpāramitā tradition, at which time elements of the emptiness doctrine would have been introduced. He further suggests that the verse section may have been an addition of the Yogācāra school.¹⁴
