The Lotus Sūtra 4.19

4.19

爾時阿難、羅睺羅而作是念：「我等每自思惟：『設得受記，不亦快乎。』」即從座起，到於佛前，頭面禮足，俱白佛言：「世尊！我等於此亦應有分，唯有如來，我等所歸。又我等為一切世間天、人、阿修羅所見知識——阿難常為侍者，護持法藏；羅睺羅是佛之子——若佛見授阿耨多羅三藐三菩提記者，我願既滿，眾望亦足。」爾時，學、無學聲聞弟子二千人，皆從座起，偏袒右肩，到於佛前，一心合掌，瞻仰世尊，如阿難、羅睺羅所願，住立一面。

At that time, Ānanda and Rāhula had this thought: 'We often contemplate to ourselves: "If we were to receive a vyākaraṇa, would it not indeed be joyful!"' They immediately rose from their seats, went before the Buddha, bowed their heads at his feet, and addressed the Buddha together, saying: 'Bhagavat! We too should have a share in this. The Tathāgata alone is our refuge. Moreover, we are recognized and known by the gods, humans, and asuras of all worlds: Ānanda is constantly the attendant, preserving the treasury of Dharma; Rāhula is the son of the Buddha. If the Buddha confers upon us the vyākaraṇa for anuttarā samyaksambodhi, our wishes will be fulfilled, and the hopes of the assembly will also be satisfied.' At that time, two thousand śrāvaka disciples, both śaikṣas and aśaikṣas, all rose from their seats, bared their right shoulders, went before the Buddha, single-mindedly joined their palms, gazed up at the Bhagavat, and, desiring what Ānanda and Rāhula desired, stood to one side.
