At that time, Maitreya Bodhisattva, wishing to resolve his own doubt and observing also the minds of the fourfold assembly of bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, and upāsikās, as well as the gathered host of devas, nāgas, ghosts, and spirits, asked Mañjuśrī: 'For what cause and condition is there this auspicious sign of supernatural power, this emission of great radiance illuminating eighteen thousand lands in the east, so that all the splendours of those Buddha realms are seen?'
