At that time, the Bhagavat serenely arose from samādhi and addressed Śāriputra: “The wisdom of the Buddhas is exceedingly profound and immeasurable; the gateway to their wisdom is difficult to comprehend and difficult to enter, beyond the capacity of any śrāvaka or pratyekabuddha to know. Why is this? The Buddhas have closely attended hundreds, thousands, myriads, kotis of countless Buddhas, fully practiced the immeasurable Dharma paths of the Buddhas, been courageous and vigorous, with their renown heard everywhere, accomplished profound, unprecedented teachings, and what they preach according to circumstance is difficult to understand. Śāriputra, since attaining Buddhahood, I have with various causes and conditions, various parables, widely expounded teachings and countless upāyas, guiding sentient beings to free them from all attachments. Why is this? The Tathāgata has fully perfected upāya and the pāramitā of knowledge and vision. Śāriputra, the Tathāgata’s knowledge and vision is vast and profound, immeasurable and unobstructed; his powers, fearlessnesses, dhyāna concentrations, and liberation samādhis deeply penetrate without bound, accomplishing all unprecedented teachings. Śāriputra, the Tathāgata can distinguish variously and skillfully explain phenomena; his words are soft and gentle, delighting the hearts of the multitude. Śāriputra, to state the essential: the Buddhas have fully accomplished immeasurable, boundless, unprecedented teachings.
