"The Sun of Wisdom, the Great Holy Honored One,
after a long time now preaches this Dharma,
himself speaking of having attained such
powers, fearlessnesses, and samādhis,
dhyāna-absorptions, liberations, and the like—
inconceivable Dharmas.
Regarding the Dharma attained at the place of awakening,
no one is able to raise questions;
my intention is hard to fathom,
and there is no one who can question it either.
Without being questioned, he speaks of himself,
praising the path he has practiced;
his wisdom is extremely subtle and wondrous,
attained by the Buddhas.
The outflow-free arhats
and those seeking nirvāṇa
have now all fallen into the net of doubt:
why does the Buddha preach this?
Those who seek the vehicle of pratyekabuddhas,
bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs,
gods, nāgas, ghosts, and spirits,
as well as gandharvas and others,
look at one another and harbor hesitation,
gazing up at the Two-Footed Honored One:
what is the meaning of this matter?
We pray that the Buddha will explain it for us.
Among the assembly of śrāvakas,
the Buddha declared me foremost.
Now, regarding my own wisdom,
I am doubtful and cannot understand:
is this the ultimate Dharma,
or is it the path to be practiced?
The sons born from the Buddha's mouth
join their palms and look up in expectation;
we pray you will emit a subtle, wondrous voice
and in due time preach it according to reality.
The gods, nāgas, spirits, and the like
are in number like the sands of the Ganges;
the Bodhisattvas seeking buddhahood
are roughly eighty thousand in number;
furthermore, from myriads of kotis of lands,
wheel-turning sage kings have arrived;
joining their palms with reverent minds,
they wish to hear the complete path."
