and fully purified; all the fully enlightened Buddhas of the past and future have likewise taught it and will teach it. Sons of noble family and daughters of noble family ought to exert themselves diligently in this.' Then, on that occasion, the Bhagavān spoke these verses: / 'Whatever designation and arrangement of phenomena there may be, / That is of great benefit for the conscientious yogin. / Those who, relying on those teachings, in this yoga / Genuinely exert themselves, will attain bodhi. / / Those who watch for flaws, argue in that manner, / And view liberation as fully comprehending all phenomena— / Maitreya, they are as far from this yoga / As the earth is far from the sky. / / The wise do not exert themselves for the sake of sentient beings, / Thinking of the sake of sentient beings, with the awareness of receiving recompense from them. / If they think of that recompense, they will not attain / The supreme of all, the joy free from material things. / / Those who give the oral transmission of the Dharma for the sake of desires / Take back the desires they had abandoned; / Those foolish people, though they have found the priceless jewel of the Dharma, / Abandon it and wander about. / / Therefore, abandon dispute, commotion, and proliferation; / Apply the supreme diligence; / And in order to liberate the world together with its gods, / Exert yourself greatly in this yoga!' / Then the bodhisattva Maitreya addressed the Bhagavān: 'Bhagavān, what is the name of this teaching in this dharmaparyāya of the Saṃdhinirmocana? How should it be remembered?' The Bhagavān replied: 'Maitreya, this is the teaching on the nītārtha of yoga; remember it as 'The Teaching on the Nītārtha of Yoga'.' When this teaching on the nītārtha of yoga was delivered, six hundred thousand living beings generated the mind directed toward unexcelled, perfect bodhi. Three hundred thousand śrāvakas obtained the dustless, stainless, completely pure Dharma-eye regarding phenomena.
