behind that?" "Avalokiteśvara, the various intrinsic natures of dharmas that I taught in the Śrāvakayāna—namely, the five aggregates, the six internal āyatanas, the six external āyatanas, and so forth—are the very things I explained in the Mahāyāna by teaching that the dharmadhātu has a single mode; therefore, I do not speak of separate yānas. In that regard, some who conceptualize the meaning merely according to the literal expression exaggerate, while others deprecate and also conceptualize that the yānas are distinct; those two merely think discordantly and dispute with one another. Such was my intention regarding that." Then, on that occasion, the Bhagavān spoke these verses: / "The various natural phenomena / Taught in the Mahāyāna and the Hīnayāna / Were also taught as having a single mode; / Therefore, I do not speak of different yānas. / Those who conceptualize according to the literal words, / Having exaggerated and deprecated, / When they think that these are contradictory, / Become confused and come to possess various views. / The bhūmis in brief, their names and discordances, / Their exceptional arisings, aspirations, and trainings: / That is the Mahāyāna taught by the Buddhas; / Those who strive in this will become Buddhas." / Then the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara said this to the Bhagavān: "Bhagavān, what is the name of this exposition of the dharma of the Saṃdhinirmocana taught here? How should it be remembered?" The Bhagavān replied to him: "Avalokiteśvara, this is the teaching on the nītārtha of the bhūmis and the pāramitās; remember it as 'The Teaching on the Nītārtha of the Bhūmis and the Pāramitās'." When this teaching on the nītārtha of the bhūmis and the pāramitās was spoken, seventy-five thousand bodhisattvas attained the bodhisattva-samādhi of the illumination of the Mahāyāna.
