The Sūtra says: "These five senses have the mind as their master; therefore, you all should properly control your minds. The fearsomeness of the mind exceeds that of venomous snakes, ferocious beasts, vengeful bandits, or rampant raging fire—none of these suffice as a simile. It is restless and fickle, looking only at the honey and failing to see the deep pit. It is like a mad elephant without an ankuśa, or an ape that has reached the trees: leaping and bounding, difficult to restrain. You must swiftly curb it and not let it be indulgent. If you indulge this mind, you will ruin human wholesome deeds; restrain it in one place, and there is nothing that cannot be accomplished. Therefore, bhikṣus, you should strive with diligence to subdue your minds."
