The Sūtra says: "You bhikṣus, during the day with diligent mind cultivate and gather wholesome dharmas, not letting time be lost. In the early night and late night, do not slacken either. In the middle of the night, recite the sūtras to pace yourselves; do not, through the condition of sleep, let an entire life pass in vain with nothing attained. You should remember that the fire of impermanence burns all worlds; quickly seek self-deliverance and do not sleep. The bandits of defilement constantly spy to kill people worse than a vengeful foe; how can you sleep and not awaken yourself in shock? The venomous snake of defilement sleeps within your heart, just as a black viper sleeps in your room; you should quickly expel it with the hook of holding the precepts. Only when the sleeping snake has departed may you sleep peacefully; to sleep when it has not departed is to be a person without shame. The garment of shame is foremost among all adornments. Shame is like an iron hook, able to restrain a person from unrighteousness. Therefore, bhikṣus, you should always feel shame and conscience, never neglecting them for an instant. If you abandon shame and conscience, you will lose all merits. One who has conscience possesses wholesome dharmas; if one lacks conscience, one is no different from the beasts."
