經曰：汝等比丘！當自摩頭，已捨飾好著壞色衣、執持應器以乞自活，自見如是，若起憍慢當疾滅之。增長憍慢尚非世俗白衣所宜，何況出家入道之人為解脫故，自降其身而行乞也。

The sūtra says: "You bhikṣus! You should stroke your own heads: you have already abandoned fine ornaments, you wear dyed garments, and you carry the alms bowl to support yourselves by begging. Seeing yourselves in this way, if arrogance arises, you must quickly extinguish it. To increase arrogance is not even fitting for worldly, white-robed laypeople, how much less for those who have gone forth to enter the path, who, for the sake of liberation, humble their bodies and practice begging!"
