The sūtra says: "You bhikṣus! You should know that a person of many desires seeks much gain, and therefore has much suffering and affliction; a person of few desires has no seeking and no desires, and thus is free from this calamity. Even ordinary fewness of desires should already be cultivated, how much more so when fewness of desires can produce all merits! A person of few desires has no deceit or crookedness to court people's favor, and moreover is not dragged along by the sense faculties. The mind of one who practices fewness of desires is open and calm, free of worry and fear; in encountering matters there is always a surplus, never a deficiency. One who has few desires has nirvāṇa. This is called fewness of desires."
