The sūtra says: 'You bhikṣus! If you seek the peaceful joy of unconditioned quietude, you should leave turmoil and dwell alone in solitude. A person in a quiet place is reverenced together by Śakra and all the devas. Therefore, you should abandon your own group and other groups, dwelling alone in a quiet and empty place to contemplate the extinguishing of the root of suffering. If you take delight in a group, you will receive group distress. It is like a great tree where many birds flock: it has the calamity of drying up and breaking. Attachment to the world submerges one in many sufferings, like an old elephant stuck in the mud, unable to get out on its own. This is retirement.'
