The Buddha tells the goddess Bodhisattvasamuccayā that in a distant past, when the Dharma of a buddha named Ratnaśikhin had disappeared, there was a virtuous king named Sureśvaraprabha. At that time, a head merchant by the name of Jaṭiṃdhara had a son by the name of Jalavāhana, who learns medicine from him and is able to cure the many illnesses prevalent in the kingdom.
