And right here the characteristics of a non-virtuous friend are stated: 'The avoidance of an evil friend should be known through the avoidance of a person deficient in ethical discipline. Likewise, through the avoidance of a person deficient in view, deficient in conduct, or deficient in livelihood; through the avoidance of a person delighting in socializing; through the avoidance of a lazy person; through the avoidance of a person delighting in saṃsāra; through the avoidance of a person averse to awakening; [and] through the avoidance of association with householders, the avoidance of an evil friend should be known. And by him, noble son, when avoiding these conditions, a corrupt mind must not be generated toward those persons, nor an angry mind, nor a mind of contempt. And in this way he should establish his mind: for it was said by the Blessed One that according to their elements sentient beings flow toward, are born into, and blend with the element of desire and so forth, and they perish from association. Therefore, I will avoid association.'
